Tan Ewe Liang works within the classical vocabulary of Chinese painting, moving comfortably between its major genres — from studies of rock and chrysanthemum to the venerable "Three Friends of Winter," pine, plum blossom and bamboo rendered together, and figures gathered at a riverbank beneath the shade of banana leaves.
His water-town landscapes, with their arched stone bridges and the reflections of home and boat, carry the same unhurried attention to atmosphere and light found throughout his floral and figure studies. Across these subjects, his brushwork favours restraint over embellishment, letting each composition breathe.
