The Association's earliest threads are tied to the Ten People Art Exhibition, an informal circle of Singapore-based artists active from the early 1960s. Among its formative figures were Yeh Chi Wei, Tan Seah Boey, Choo Keng Kwang and Lim Tze Peng — painters whose long journeys through the region, from Malaya and Indonesia to Sarawak, Thailand, Cambodia, India and Nepal across the 1960s and into the early 1970s, brought back a new visual vocabulary for the region. 协会最早的脉络，系于《十人画展》——一个自六十年代初即活跃于 新加坡的非正式艺术家群体。其中的奠基人物 包括叶之威、陈城梅、朱庆光与林子平——这些画家于六十年代至七十年代初 远游马来亚、印尼、沙捞越、泰国、柬埔寨、印度与尼泊尔等地写生，为本区域带回了崭新的视觉语汇。

Their second overseas trip, in 1962, took the group through Java and Bali, Indonesia, where a surviving commemorative album records sketches made along the way and pages of well-wishes exchanged with Indonesian artists in Jakarta, Denpasar and Yogyakarta. Out of this circle, on 26 September 1970, the South-East Asia Art Association was formally constituted. Its founding president was Yeh Chi Wei. The intent was modest and ambitious in equal measure: to give South-East Asian artistic expression an organised home, and to make possible the kind of large-scale exhibition that no single artist could mount alone. 正是从这一群体中，东南亚美术协会于 1970 年 9 月 26 日正式成立， 首任会长为叶之威。其初衷既朴素又宏大：为东南亚的艺术表达提供一个 有组织的家园，并使单凭一己之力无法举办的大型展览成为可能。

In its first year of activity, the Association organised the South East Asia University and College Students Art Competition — an unusually early attempt to seed regional dialogue at the level of art education itself. The competition was jointly organised with Sin Chew Jit Poh and the Nanyang University Art Society, and by April 1971 press reports noted a strong response from across South-East Asia. 在成立后的第一年，协会便举办了东南亚大专学生美术比赛—— 这是一次不同寻常的早期尝试，意在从艺术教育的层面播下区域对话的种子。 此项比赛由《星洲日报》、南洋大学美术协会与本会联合主办， 1971 年 4 月的报导指出，此赛获得东南亚各国的热烈反应。

The competition's judging panel, photographed together in July 1971, included fifteen judges: Chen Jen Hao, Professor Huang Xuwu, Yeh Chi Wei, Liu Kang, Chen Chong Swee, Lin Youquan, Lee Man Fong, Professor Weng Tongwen, A. Ghani Hamid, Foo Chee San, Ho Ho Ying, Lim Tze Peng, Choo Keng Kwang, Assistant Professor Sung Ming-Shuen, and Professor Tai Hsuan-chih. The 1974 South-East Asia Art Exhibition is the moment the Association came into its own. 1976 · Cultural exchange exhibition in Manila1976 · 马尼拉文化交流联展

On 20 November 1976, the Association's cultural exchange exhibition formally opened in Manila, the Philippines. Participating artists included Goh Beng Kuan, Ling Hoon and Yeh Chi Wei, among other South-East Asian artists. Exhibitions of this kind were intended to foster contemporary art exchange between Singapore and fellow ASEAN countries such as the Philippines. 1976 年 11 月 20 日，东南亚美术协会的文化交流联展在菲律宾马尼拉正式 开幕，参展人员包括吴民权、凌运凰与叶之威等东南亚艺术家。此类展览旨在推动新加坡与 菲律宾等东盟国家之间的当代美术互动。

Source: Sin Chew Jit Poh, 20 Nov 1976. No photographs or exhibition materials from this show are known to survive in the Association's own records. A copy of the accompanying catalogue was privately held for many years before being donated to a museum collection in 2010; a further copy is held in a library collection, though it is not available there for photography or reproduction. 1995 · Honorary chairmanship of Wu Molin1995 · 吴墨麟出任名誉主席

Since 1995, the Chinese ink painting master Wu Molin has served as the Association's Honorary Chairman and Chief Advisor. His tenure has anchored a continuing exchange with China, including the regular SEAAA art tours that have become a hallmark of the society. 自 1995 年起，中国水墨画大家吴墨麟一直担任协会的名誉主席兼首席顾问。 在他任内，协会与中国的持续交流得以稳固，包括已成为协会标志的 定期访华艺术之旅。

2023 · A new president2023 · 新任会长

In 2023, after a long stewardship by Tan Ewe Liang, the presidency was passed to Yeh Toh Yen — a continuity, in name and in lineage, with the Association's founders. 2023 年，在陈有良长期掌舵之后，会长一职交予叶独元—— 无论在名分还是在传承上，都延续着协会创始者的血脉。
